Zakatul Fitar is $9 per person – Must be paid before Salatul Prayer

What is Zakatul Fitar?

Zakat ul Fitr is a charitable donation of food that must be given before Eid prayer, before the end of the month of Ramadan. The practice is mentioned in the Quran and hadith and was intended to have people focus on feeding the poor and needy. There are no set rules on how much should be donated, but it should be something that the individual can afford and will feel good about giving.

How much is Zakatul Fitar?

The quantity is recognized by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as one sa’ of flour, and one sa’ is equivalent up to four mad’ah. A madah is the dimension that can be scooped up while the forefinger and middle finger are outstretched. If we convert this into the approximate monetary value based on the cost of staple food such as millet or beans, it is approximately $9 per person.
